Recently Nathan and I decided that the world has not been blessed enough by our collective wisdom. We have decided to remedy that by offering a series of Commander deck tech columns for those cards we feel are unloved and under-appreciated.
The first card we submit for your perusal is Artificer's Intuition.
For those unfamiliar with the card, here it is in text form (for those whose computers are still somehow unable to deal with pictures):
Artificer's Intuition - 1U
Enchantment (Rare - Fifth Dawn)
U, Discard an artifact card from your hand: Search your library for an artifact card with converted mana cost 1 or less, reveal that card, and put it into your hand. Then shuffle your library.
Art by Wayne England (for those weirdos who care).
The first question the intelligent deck builder (which, for the purposes of this article, we will assume the readers of this site to be) asks is, "What does it get for me?"
The usual answers:
Sol Ring
Sensei's Divining Top
Mana Crypt
Skullclamp
Relic of Progenitus
Voltaic Key
Basilisk Collar
Those cards are in many, if not most, decks these days. Those are just what we can think of off the top of our pointy, little heads.
Other cards should be considered as well, though. Namely:
Artifact lands: Fix your mana for U!
Hex Parasite: Find your planeswalker kill for U!
Expedition map: Go get your most ridiculous non-basic land for U!
Pithing Needle - Do stuff. For U!
Everflowing Chalice - MOAR MANAS!
Chalice of the Void - For those who like control decks. For U!
Chimeric Mass - a big, game-ending beater that, frankly is completely unloved by most of the Commander hordes. FOR U!
Admittedly, you also have to discard an artifact to do these things. However, this is a bonus for many decks.
In Hanna, you give Hanna something useful to do.
In Sharuum, you give the entire table a feeling of impending doom.
These are not the only decks this sleek, beautiful card can be slipped gently into, however. With just a few other wonderful cards, this thing will shine like a nearly 40-year-old TO's head under the bright fluorescents of your local gaming establishment. Consider these:
Scarecrone: Return things, draw cards, win games.
Argivian Restoration: Big thing SMASH! (for U!) (And 2UU)
Open the Vaults/Roar of Reclamation - Fill graveyard, empty graveyard, ..., PROFIT.
In conclusion, Artificer's Intuition is just begging to be taken out of your collection and dressed up in a nice sleeve to visit your friends in Commander game and utterly wreck them, leaving only charred, smoking ruins where their decks once stood. Don't disappoint it.
